Trent Innes, the former managing director of Xero Australia, introduced the 'coffee cup test' as part of his hiring process. In a 2019 podcast interview with The Venture, Innes explained his approach: "I always take the candidate to the kitchen and offer them a drink. After the interview, I observe whether they take their empty cup back to the kitchen". This minor action, according to Innes, speaks volumes about a candidate's attitude and sense of ownership, qualities he deems essential for a good cultural fit within the company.

Why the Coffee Cup Test Matters

The core idea behind the coffee cup test is simple: it assesses whether an individual is willing to take responsibility for even the smallest tasks.
