The urgent need for coffee variety diversification in a changing world

  • The coffee industry urgently needs to develop new varieties to combat climate change and ensure sustainability.
  • Diversifying coffee varieties can improve farmer livelihoods, expand flavor profiles, and create opportunities for market differentiation.
  • Consumers play a crucial role in supporting coffee diversity by seeking out and purchasing coffees from different origins and varieties.

[WORLD] In the world of coffee, change is brewing. As climate change threatens traditional coffee-growing regions and consumer tastes evolve, the need for new coffee varieties has never been more pressing. This urgency is underscored by recent initiatives, including Starbucks' trial of new arabica beans, which highlight the critical importance of diversifying the global coffee portfolio.

Jennifer 'Vern' Long, chief executive of World Coffee Research (WCR), a United States-based global organization dedicated to agricultural innovation for coffee supply, emphasizes the significance of this issue. "The world needs more new varieties of coffee beans so that bean farmers and producers can make more profit and the market does not get monopolised by a few coffee-producing countries or roasters that offer limited choices," Long states.

The Current State of Coffee Varieties

The coffee industry currently relies on a surprisingly limited number of varieties. According to Long, there are fewer than 120 coffee bean varieties in circulation, with over 90 being Arabica varieties and the rest Robusta. This pales in comparison to other crops like apples, which boast over 5,000 varieties. This lack of diversity not only limits flavor options for consumers but also poses significant risks to the industry's sustainability.

Climate Change: A Looming Threat

Climate change presents one of the most significant challenges to coffee production. Rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall patterns, and increased pest and disease pressure threaten traditional coffee-growing regions. Without new, resilient varieties, many coffee farmers face an uncertain future.

Long explains, "Next-generation coffee varieties with improved resilience against climate change are important for ensuring profitability and productivity of farmers in top exporting countries such as Brazil, Honduras, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Uganda and Vietnam and stabilizing their global supply".

The Push for New Varieties

Recognizing the urgent need for innovation, organizations like World Coffee Research are spearheading efforts to develop new coffee varieties. These initiatives aim to create beans that are not only more resilient to climate change but also offer unique flavor profiles to satisfy evolving consumer preferences.

Starbucks Leads the Way

In a groundbreaking move, Starbucks has begun trialing new arabica bean varieties developed by WCR. This initiative represents a significant step towards diversifying the coffee market and ensuring its long-term sustainability.

"If you compare the varieties of apple to those of coffee bean, you can see how little we've invested in diversifying coffee beans," Long remarked, highlighting the vast potential for innovation in the coffee sector.

Benefits of Coffee Variety Diversification

1. Enhanced Climate Resilience

New coffee varieties can be bred to withstand higher temperatures, resist pests and diseases, and thrive in changing environmental conditions. This resilience is crucial for maintaining stable coffee production in the face of climate change.

2. Improved Farmer Livelihoods

By developing varieties that are more productive and resistant to environmental stresses, farmers can potentially increase their yields and income. This is particularly important for smallholder farmers in developing countries who rely on coffee as their primary source of income.

3. Expanded Flavor Profiles

Diversity in coffee varieties translates to a broader range of flavor experiences for consumers. Long notes, "Diversity of coffee origins brings unique flavors, sensory experiences and compelling narratives about the communities that produce coffee products".

4. Market Differentiation

For coffee roasters and retailers, a wider variety of coffee beans provides opportunities for product differentiation. This can lead to increased consumer choice and potentially higher profit margins for unique or specialty coffees.

Challenges in Developing New Varieties

While the benefits of coffee variety diversification are clear, the process of developing new varieties is complex and time-consuming.

Long-Term Investment

Creating new coffee varieties requires significant time and financial investment. It can take years, if not decades, to develop, test, and commercialize a new variety.

International Cooperation

Effective coffee breeding programs require collaboration across borders. The recent G7 agreement to provide financial support to coffee-bean-exporting countries for research on new coffee varieties is a step in the right direction.

The Role of Consumers

Consumers play a crucial role in driving demand for diverse coffee varieties. By seeking out and supporting coffees from different origins and varieties, consumers can help create market incentives for continued innovation in the coffee sector.

Long emphasizes this point, stating, "As climate change creates more challenges for tropical agriculture, it's coffee drinkers who find themselves connected to these growing challenges. They should help raise awareness about the needs to support lower-income countries as they strive to adapt to the changing climate".

Looking to the Future

The future of coffee depends on continued innovation and diversification. World Coffee Research has already released its first generation of four new Arabica varieties for pre-commercial trials, with plans to release a second generation by 2030 and the first generation of new Robusta varieties by 2033.

These efforts, combined with initiatives like Starbucks' trials of new varieties, paint a hopeful picture for the future of coffee. However, continued investment, research, and collaboration across the industry will be crucial to ensure a diverse and sustainable coffee sector for generations to come.

The need for more coffee varieties is not just about expanding our palette of flavors; it's about securing the future of one of the world's most beloved beverages. As climate change threatens traditional coffee-growing regions and consumer preferences evolve, the development of new, resilient coffee varieties becomes increasingly critical.

By investing in coffee variety research and supporting initiatives that promote diversity in the coffee sector, we can help ensure a sustainable and vibrant future for coffee farmers, roasters, and consumers alike. The world needs more varieties of coffee, and it's up to all of us – from industry leaders to everyday coffee drinkers – to support this crucial transformation in the global coffee landscape.
