Trump and Biden's historic White House meeting

  • Donald Trump's return visit to the White House marks an important restoration of tradition after years of political tension.
  • Both President-elect Trump and outgoing President Joe Biden pledged a smooth transition despite their past conflicts.
  • Trump's second term is expected to be characterized by hardline policies and significant reshuffling within his administration.

[UNITED STATES] Mr. Joe Biden welcomed Donald Trump back to the White House on November 13, demonstrating politeness to a bitter adversary who did not afford him the same courtesy four years earlier. The US president and president-elect clasped hands in front of a roaring fire in the Oval Office, promising a peaceful transition - a stark contrast to Trump's inability to accept his 2020 setback.

"Welcome back," Mr Biden, 81, said as he congratulated the 78-year-old Trump and delivered brief opening words to the man he has often labeled as a threat to democracy.

The atmosphere in the Oval Office was notably different from the tense political climate that has characterized much of their interactions over the past years. Observers noted that both leaders seemed intent on projecting an image of unity and cooperation, despite their well-documented differences. This meeting was not just about tradition; it was a strategic move by both parties to signal stability and continuity in governance, especially after a highly contentious election cycle.

Mr. Biden, who withdrew out of the race in July but saw his successor, Ms Kamala Harris, lose to Trump last week, said he was "looking forward to having a smooth transition" and promised to do "everything we can to make sure you're accommodated." As the two presidents, who are 159 years old combined, shook hands, Biden appeared to look down, while Trump leaned forward and looked him in the eye.

Trump whipped up a mob that invaded the US Capitol in 2021 and waged a harsh and divided election campaign this year, but he attempted to strike a polite tone during his return visit to the White House.

"Politics is difficult, and in many circumstances, it is a harsh reality. It's a nice world today, and I really appreciate it," Trump remarked.

Behind closed doors, discussions between Trump and Biden reportedly covered critical issues such as foreign policy challenges and domestic priorities. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan highlighted that Biden emphasized the importance of maintaining U.S. support for Ukraine amidst ongoing tensions with Russia. Trump's stance on this issue has been notably skeptical in the past, adding an additional layer of complexity to their conversation.

Trump also stated that the transition of power would be as "smooth as you can get." Trump will return to the White House on January 20 with immense legislative power, since US media predicted on November 13 that Republicans would win a majority in the US House of Representatives.

The victory provides the Republicans a full sweep of Congress, allowing Trump to carry out his campaign promises of mass deportations of migrants and retaliation against political opponents.

In addition to policy discussions, there was a focus on logistical aspects of the transition. Both leaders' chief of staffs were present for part of the meeting, ensuring that operational details were addressed efficiently. This included conversations about staffing changes and potential shifts in administrative priorities under Trump's incoming administration. Such thorough preparation underscores both leaders' commitment to ensuring governmental functions continue without disruption during this period of change.

Even while Democrats are reeling from the victory, Mr Biden is determined to make a show of doing the right thing. His Oval Office invitation reinstated a tradition that Trump broke when he lost the 2020 election, refusing to meet with Mr Biden or attend the inauguration.

The absence of Melania Trump during this visit was noted by many as breaking another tradition where outgoing First Ladies typically meet with their successors. Instead, Jill Biden presented Trump with a personal letter addressed to Melania, expressing her willingness to assist with any transitional needs. This gesture was seen as another example of Biden's efforts to restore decorum and respect within these customary proceedings.

As Trump prepares for his second term, speculation abounds regarding his policy agenda and potential cabinet appointments. With figures like Matt Gaetz being considered for key positions such as Attorney General, it is clear that Trump's administration may pursue aggressive legal reforms aimed at dismantling perceived government overreach. These appointments are likely to face intense scrutiny from both political allies and opponents alike.

The meeting concluded with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to uphold democratic principles through this transition period. Despite their past animosities, this encounter at the White House serves as a reminder of the enduring strength of American democratic traditions even amidst political turbulence. The world watches closely as these two influential figures navigate this pivotal moment in U.S. history.
