  • A gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights, Malaysia, injured 145 people and caused widespread damage to homes and vehicles.
  • Gas Malaysia experienced supply disruptions, impacting both residential and industrial consumers across several regions.
  • Investigations into the cause of the explosion are ongoing, with authorities working to restore normalcy and prevent further incidents.

[MALAYSIA] On April 1, 2025, a significant explosion occurred at a Petronas gas pipeline in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, Selangor, leading to a substantial fire that injured 145 individuals and caused extensive property damage. The incident has notably disrupted gas supplies, affecting both residential and industrial consumers across several regions.

The explosion took place at approximately 8:08 a.m., producing flames that reached heights of up to 30 meters. Emergency services responded promptly, evacuating residents within a 290-meter radius. The fire resulted in injuries to 145 people, including three children, with 67 individuals hospitalized for second and third-degree burns. Additionally, 190 houses and 148 vehicles sustained damage.

Impact on Gas Supply

The aftermath of the explosion has led to significant disruptions in gas supply. Gas Malaysia Berhad reported that approximately 7% of its total gas volume has been affected. Initially, supply curtailments were announced for areas including Shah Alam, Klang, Serdang, Puchong, Batu Tiga, and Kapar. Subsequently, the curtailment expanded to additional regions such as Merbau, Tronoh, Perai, Junjung, and Hutan Melintang.

In response, Gas Malaysia has intensified coordination with affected customers and suppliers to manage the situation effectively. The company emphasized its commitment to mitigating customer impact, ensuring public safety, and maintaining service integrity during this period.

Industrial and Residential Repercussions

The supply disruption has had a cascading effect on various industries. For instance, Khee San Bhd, a confectionery manufacturer, reported that its production facilities have been impacted due to the gas supply interruption.

On the residential front, the explosion led to the displacement of approximately 538 individuals. Temporary evacuation centers were established at local mosques and community halls to accommodate those affected. As of April 8, assessments indicated that 270 out of 437 inspected houses were deemed safe for reoccupation.

Ongoing Investigations and Measures

Authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the pipeline failure. Minister of Housing and Local Government, Nga Kor Ming, confirmed that standard investigative protocols are being followed. Selangor's Chief Minister, Amirudin Shari, indicated that an initial report was expected within 72 hours of the incident.

In the interim, Petronas has been collaborating with investigators and providing aid to those affected. The company has also been exploring alternative gas supply options to mitigate the impact on consumers.

The Putra Heights pipeline explosion has underscored vulnerabilities in the region's gas supply infrastructure, affecting both industrial operations and residential communities. As investigations continue, stakeholders are working diligently to restore normalcy, ensure safety, and prevent future occurrences. Consumers are advised to stay informed through official channels for updates on gas supply restoration efforts.
