  • US Congressman Rob Wittman compares the growing alliance between China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran to the pre-WWII "axis of evil," warning of a global shift towards authoritarianism.
  • The article highlights how both Donald Trump's confrontational policies and Xi Jinping's leadership have escalated tensions, reshaping the global order and threatening democratic values.
  • Wittman advocates for stronger cooperation between democratic nations, emphasizing alliances like the Quad and AUKUS as crucial to counter China's growing influence and maintain global stability.

[WORLD] The ongoing geopolitical tension between China, the United States, and other global players is rapidly transforming the world stage. A recent statement by US Congressman Rob Wittman brought sharp focus to these escalating global divides. At a keynote address delivered at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, Wittman voiced a powerful sentiment about the emerging global alliances and rivalries, particularly between the United States and China. Referring to China as part of a new "axis of evil," he underscored the stark divergence in global visions under the leadership of former U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The Rising Threat: China and the Axis of Evil

Rob Wittman, a Republican congressman and Vice-Chair of the influential House Armed Services Committee, drew a parallel between today’s geopolitical climate and the ominous days leading up to World War II. During his address, Wittman argued that the growing alliance between China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran resembles the early formations of an "axis of evil," similar to the one described by President George W. Bush in 2002. According to Wittman, this alignment threatens the liberal world order led by the United States and its allies.

“There’s a big contrast between the United States and our allies and China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran,” Wittman remarked. “That is a building axis of evil. The same thing is emerging today, as we saw in 1938, and we ought to be very, very mindful of that.” His words resonated across the political spectrum, as they highlighted the perceived growing authoritarian threat led by China under Xi Jinping, and the expansion of influence by Russia, North Korea, and Iran.

This "axis of evil" concept positions China at the core of a new adversarial block, which could shift the dynamics of global politics in unprecedented ways. Wittman’s warning emphasizes the rising authoritarianism of these regimes and the clear contrast between them and democratic nations, which are united under the banner of rule of law and democratic values.

China’s Increasing Global Influence Under Xi Jinping

Under the leadership of Xi Jinping, China has increasingly positioned itself as a formidable global power, challenging the traditional Western-led international order. Xi’s assertive foreign policy, marked by initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and China’s growing military presence in the Indo-Pacific, has fueled growing tensions with the United States and its allies.

At the CSIS event, Wittman emphasized the need for stronger cooperation among democratic nations, specifically mentioning key alliances like the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) and the AUKUS agreement. These alliances, which include countries such as the United States, India, Japan, Australia, and the UK, have been increasingly viewed as counterbalances to China’s growing influence in Asia and beyond.

“We must work together as allies to match the defense industrial base that China has built up under Xi,” Wittman urged. The message was clear: to challenge China’s military and economic expansion, it’s crucial that the US and its allies coordinate efforts in critical sectors like military technology, defense spending, and the protection of strategic resources such as critical minerals.

The Role of Donald Trump in Shaping US-China Relations

While Xi’s China has been steadily advancing its global influence, Trump’s foreign policy played a significant role in reshaping the US's approach to China and other authoritarian regimes. Although Trump’s stance on China was highly confrontational, his rhetoric and policies, particularly the trade war, escalated tensions between the two nations. Trump viewed China’s rise with suspicion and often spoke about the need to contain China's growing influence, which he saw as a direct challenge to American interests.

A Chinese academic, speaking at the same event, critiqued Trump’s approach, suggesting that his actions were driven by a desire to carve up the world in a way that benefited the United States at the expense of its allies. The critic argued that Trump’s “America First” policy, while initially appealing to American voters, undermined long-standing partnerships and risked isolating the US on the global stage.

Despite the stark contrasts in their leadership styles, both Trump and Xi share a common goal: to cement their countries as dominant global powers. Trump’s unorthodox approach to foreign policy led to strained relations with key allies, while Xi’s state-controlled model of governance represents a direct challenge to the liberal democratic order.

The Quad and AUKUS: US Allies Respond to China's Growing Threat

The rise of China has prompted the US and its allies to rethink their strategic priorities. One of the most significant responses to China's growing power has been the strengthening of alliances such as the Quad and AUKUS. These partnerships are increasingly seen as a way for the US and its allies to counterbalance China's influence in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.

Wittman praised these alliances for their role in ensuring peace and stability in the region. The Quad, consisting of the US, India, Japan, and Australia, is a strategic grouping aimed at ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific. It has gained significant traction in recent years, especially as China’s maritime ambitions have raised concerns about regional security.

The AUKUS agreement, a security pact between the US, the UK, and Australia, is another important step in strengthening military and technological cooperation among democratic nations. The pact, which focuses on sharing nuclear-powered submarine technology and other advanced defense capabilities, is seen as a direct response to China’s increasing military capabilities in the region.

“These alliances must be the foundation of our response to China,” Wittman stated. “If we stand united with our allies, we can push back against any attempt by China or other authoritarian powers to reshape the world order.”

The Geopolitical Landscape: A New Cold War?

The rhetoric surrounding the "axis of evil" and the increasing global rivalry between China and the US suggests that we may be entering a new Cold War era. Just as the US and the Soviet Union engaged in a global struggle for ideological dominance during the 20th century, today, China’s rise presents a new ideological and geopolitical challenge to the West.

The comparison to the pre-World War II era, as suggested by Wittman, is not without merit. The global power struggles of the late 1930s set the stage for a world-altering conflict, and many experts believe that current tensions between the US and China could lead to a similar conflict if not properly managed.

The growing divide between the democratic West and authoritarian regimes like China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran raises critical questions about the future of global governance. As the US seeks to rally its allies and counter China's rise, the world watches closely to see how this new era of global rivalry unfolds.

The vision of a world divided by an "axis of evil" as articulated by Rob Wittman represents a stark shift in how the US views its relationship with China and other authoritarian powers. As Xi Jinping continues to consolidate his power, both domestically and internationally, the US and its allies face an uncertain future. The rise of China under Xi’s leadership, coupled with the confrontational stance of Donald Trump during his presidency, has set the stage for an era of heightened tensions and geopolitical rivalry.

In this increasingly polarized world, alliances like the Quad and AUKUS will be crucial in ensuring that democratic nations stand united against the growing authoritarian bloc. Whether this new global order will lead to a peaceful coexistence or a more intense struggle for dominance remains to be seen. However, one thing is clear: the US and its allies must remain vigilant in the face of the emerging axis of evil and the rising power of China.
