5 essential tips for buying the right household appliances

  • Prioritize energy-efficient and repairable appliances to save money and reduce waste over time.
  • Choose quality over low upfront costs to avoid high repair or replacement expenses in the future.
  • Consider used or refurbished appliances as a sustainable and affordable alternative to buying new.

[WORLD] When you're in the market for a new household appliance, it can be overwhelming to choose the right one. From washing machines to refrigerators, the choices are vast, and the decisions you make can have long-term implications. Whether you’re looking to replace an old appliance or making your first purchase, there are five essential tips to help guide you in making a sound decision.

Reparability: A Key Factor for Sustainability

One of the most important aspects to consider when purchasing a new appliance is its ability to be repaired. Not all household items are designed for easy repair, which can lead to more waste and higher long-term costs. “For a number of appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, tumble dryers, televisions and vacuum cleaners, they must be repairable under the European Union's Ecodesign Directive,” explains Philip Heldt, an expert for resource protection at a consumer protection agency.

However, as Heldt points out, not all manufacturers prioritize repairable designs. Many companies focus on creating products that are meant to be replaced rather than repaired, contributing to waste and environmental damage. It’s crucial to check whether the appliance you’re interested in is designed for longevity and repairability. Brands that offer easy access to spare parts and have a reputation for durable goods are ideal choices.

Energy Efficiency: Save Money and the Environment

Energy efficiency is another critical consideration when purchasing appliances. While energy-efficient models can sometimes have a higher upfront cost, the long-term savings on electricity bills can make them worthwhile. Appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, and dishwashers that meet energy efficiency standards will ultimately save you more money.

Heldt adds, “Often, energy-efficient devices are somewhat more expensive, but it is indisputably so that the cost-savings from saving energy are greater than the higher purchase price, at least for larger appliances.” Investing in appliances with energy-saving features will also contribute to reducing your household’s carbon footprint.

Price: Don't Be Tempted by Low Initial Costs

When an appliance breaks down, it’s tempting to buy the cheapest option. However, it’s essential to consider the total cost of ownership, which includes not just the purchase price but also maintenance and repair costs. Inexpensive models may seem like a good deal, but they could end up costing you more in repairs and replacements over time.

Sometimes, paying more upfront for a reliable, energy-efficient, and repairable appliance is the smarter financial decision. Be mindful of deals that seem too good to be true, as they might not offer the same level of durability or support.

Warranty and Customer Service

A good warranty and responsive customer service can make a world of difference when dealing with issues that may arise with your appliance. Ensure that the appliance you purchase comes with a solid warranty that covers potential issues. A longer warranty period often reflects the manufacturer’s confidence in the product’s quality.

Additionally, check the availability of customer service and how easy it is to get assistance in case something goes wrong. Reviews and consumer feedback can provide valuable insights into the experiences of others who have dealt with the company's service team.

Consider Buying Used or Refurbished Appliances

Did you know that some of the electrical items discarded by consumers are still fully functional? According to experts, around 60% of electrical goods discarded at recycling centers are still usable. As a result, it may be worth considering buying a used or refurbished appliance.

These items are often tested for functionality, and you can find them at a fraction of the cost of brand-new models. Purchasing second-hand appliances can be a sustainable and affordable way to furnish your home without contributing to unnecessary waste.

"This means that a lot is discarded even though it is not even broken. This is an enormous waste." - Philip Heldt, Resource Protection Expert

Buying a household appliance isn’t just about picking the latest model or the lowest price tag; it’s about choosing products that are built to last, save energy, and can be repaired when necessary. By considering factors like reparability, energy efficiency, and warranty support, you’ll make a decision that not only suits your immediate needs but also benefits your finances and the environment in the long term.

As you shop for your next appliance, don’t be afraid to invest a little more in quality, sustainability, and longevity. After all, it’s not just about making a purchase—it’s about making the right choice for your home and the planet.
