The power of a tidy desk

  • A clean and organized workspace can significantly improve focus, productivity, and professional image, with studies showing that cluttered environments can negatively impact work performance and how employees are perceived.
  • While maintaining a tidy desk is important, it's crucial to strike a balance between organization and personalization, allowing for a few positive triggers like family photos or plants that can provide comfort without causing distraction.
  • Modern workplace design trends, such as activity-based working and ergonomic considerations, are emphasizing the importance of creating flexible, personalized spaces that promote both physical and mental well-being while maintaining a professional appearance.

Keeping your desk tidy might help you concentrate at home or at work. Iris Dohmen, a German psychologist located in Berlin, advises businesses on topics such as stress and time management. She discusses the importance of maintaining a clean workspace and why she no longer utilizes Post-it notes, citing organizational and time management reasons. I feel less stressed when I am well-organized, including at my desk.

Recent studies have shown that a tidy workspace can significantly impact productivity and mental well-being. According to a survey conducted by the National Association of Professional Organizers, 82% of respondents reported that clutter and disorganization negatively affected their work performance. Additionally, researchers at Princeton University found that a cluttered environment can make it more difficult to focus and process information efficiently.

An disorganized workstation in the office might lead to criticism from superiors and colleagues, such as if you are ill and the person covering for you is unable to locate the necessary papers. A disorganized workstation also makes a bad impression on clients, which can have repercussions for others in the organization and, finally, for you. According to studies, if a desk appears messy, employees may be perceived as unorganized and uncommitted to their task.

While the benefits of a tidy workspace are clear, it's important to note that different individuals may have varying preferences when it comes to organization. Some professionals thrive in a more "organized chaos" environment, where items are arranged in a way that makes sense to them but may appear cluttered to others. The key is to find a balance that works for you and supports your productivity without compromising professionalism.

"A picture of your children or partner can be comforting in tough moments. Looking at it can temporarily distract you during a difficult phone contact with a customer, allowing you to remain cheerful."

"Some people's workstations are cluttered with personal belongings. Sudoku puzzles and magazines are natural distractions. So it's critical to strike a balance."

"Things that you require for work but are not on your to-do list should likewise be kept out of sight because they can disturb the flow of concentration."

Experts in workplace design have begun to emphasize the importance of creating personalized spaces that reflect an individual's personality while maintaining a professional appearance. This approach, known as "activity-based working," allows employees to choose from a variety of work settings throughout the day, depending on their tasks and preferences. This flexibility can lead to increased job satisfaction and productivity, while still maintaining a clean and organized overall workspace.

However, one or two positive triggers, such as a family portrait or a plant, are beneficial to maintain on a desk. A stress ball can also be effective in tense situations. "My workplace is organized by theme. I keep the most important stuff within close reach. A desk should be organized depending on relevance and urgency. If I'm expecting a call from a significant customer within the next two days, I must be prepared and know where to find all of the required papers. Anything else would seem unprofessional."

The concept of "desk ergonomics" has gained traction in recent years, with many companies investing in adjustable furniture and accessories to promote employee health and comfort. A well-organized desk not only contributes to mental clarity but can also support physical well-being. Proper placement of frequently used items, such as keyboards, mice, and documents, can reduce strain on the body and minimize the risk of repetitive stress injuries.

"My desk used to be cluttered and covered in Post-it notes. I've now gotten into the practice of taking notes using tools like an online calendar, which works great."
