  • Flights from Hong Kong to Japan will operate every 15 minutes during Lunar New Year.
  • The Airport Authority expects a 30% increase in flight numbers compared to last year.
  • Efficient airport operations are crucial for managing increased passenger traffic during this busy period.

[WORLD] As the Lunar New Year approaches, travel between Hong Kong and Japan is set to reach unprecedented levels. With flights scheduled to depart every 15 minutes, this surge in air traffic reflects not only the festive spirit but also the ongoing recovery of the aviation industry post-pandemic.

The Demand for Travel

According to Vivian Cheung Kar-fay, acting CEO of the Airport Authority, the demand for flights during this period is robust. "We have close to 75 pairs of flights heading to and from Japan every day to 13 cities, meaning it's almost one flight every 15 minutes," she stated. This significant increase in flight frequency is indicative of a broader trend as travelers seek to reconnect with loved ones and explore new destinations after years of restrictions.

Flight Details and Destinations

During the Lunar New Year festivities, there will be nearly 150 flights operating between Hong Kong and various Japanese cities. This includes major hubs such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, catering to a diverse range of travelers—from families visiting relatives to tourists eager to experience Japan's unique culture and cuisine.

Cheung highlighted that "there will be a growth of over 30 percent in flights compared with last year," showcasing a strong rebound in travel demand. This increase is not just a temporary spike; it signals a return to pre-pandemic levels of air travel, with daily passenger throughput expected to reach 200,000.

Smooth Operations Amid High Traffic

The surge in flights comes with its own set of challenges. However, Cheung reassured the public that operations at Hong Kong International Airport are running smoothly. "About 200,000 passengers passed through the airport every day in the past few days, and operations were smooth with sufficient staff to handle the heavy traffic," she noted. This efficient management is crucial for ensuring that travelers have a pleasant experience during what can often be a hectic travel period.

Economic Implications

The increase in flights not only benefits travelers but also has significant economic implications for both Hong Kong and Japan. The influx of tourists can provide a much-needed boost to local economies, particularly in sectors such as hospitality, retail, and transportation.

Moreover, as airlines ramp up their services, jobs in the aviation sector are likely to increase as well. This recovery phase is essential for rebuilding confidence in air travel and encouraging more people to book flights.

Travel Tips for Lunar New Year

For those planning to travel during this busy period, here are some tips:

Book Early: Given the high demand for flights, it’s advisable to book tickets as early as possible.

Arrive Early at the Airport: With increased passenger traffic, arriving at least three hours before your flight can help avoid last-minute stress.

Stay Informed: Keep an eye on flight schedules and any potential changes due to weather or operational issues.

The upcoming Lunar New Year promises an exciting time for travelers between Hong Kong and Japan. With flights operating every 15 minutes and a significant increase in capacity, this festive season is set to be one of the busiest yet. As we navigate this post-pandemic world, the resilience of the aviation industry shines through, offering hope for continued recovery and growth in global travel.
