Do you really need mouthwash?

  • Mouthwash offers benefits like reducing bacteria, freshening breath, and preventing cavities but cannot replace brushing or flossing.
  • Unlike toothpaste and floss, mouthwash lacks mechanical cleaning action but reaches areas toothbrushes might miss, making it a useful addition to oral care routines.
  • Mouthwash is particularly beneficial for individuals with braces, gum disease, or high cavity risk, but its necessity varies based on personal oral health needs.

[WORLD] Mouthwash has become a staple in many people’s oral hygiene routine, often used for freshening breath. However, its benefits go beyond just eliminating bad breath. According to Stefan Zimmer, a professor of tooth preservation and preventive dentistry at Witten/Herdecke University in Germany, mouth rinses can indeed be a "very useful addition to oral hygiene." The antibacterial active ingredients in mouth rinses are particularly effective for managing bleeding gums and for strengthening tooth surfaces with the fluoride they contain, making teeth more resistant to acids.

Despite these advantages, it is important to note that mouthwash cannot replace regular brushing and flossing. As Zimmer points out, "Mouth rinses cannot replace your toothbrush." For thorough oral care, it’s essential to incorporate fluoride toothpaste and tools like dental floss or interdental brushes. For those who find these tools difficult to use, mouth rinses may serve as a useful alternative, effectively cleaning between teeth as dental floss does.

Mouthwashes are especially recommended for individuals with medical conditions that make brushing difficult, or for those at an increased risk of tooth decay. Lea Lukas, a researcher at a German consumer watchdog, adds that mouthwash is essential for teenagers with fixed braces. The need for mouthwash solutions arises when a more thorough cleaning is required, but traditional brushing tools are inadequate.

When using mouthwash, proper technique is crucial. The recommended amount, typically 10ml, should be swished around the mouth for 30 seconds. Zimmer advises that rather than gargling, you should move the mouthwash back and forth in your mouth to ensure it reaches the teeth and gums, particularly between the teeth. After using mouthwash, it’s important not to rinse your mouth with water immediately to let the solution continue to work. Additionally, swallowing mouthwash is not recommended.

Mouthwash can be an effective part of your oral hygiene routine, but it should not replace brushing and flossing. It is most beneficial when used as a complementary product, particularly for individuals with special dental needs.
